Legal Scholarship Program 2022 to 2023 | FLP Scholarship


The Foundation for Liberty and Prosperity (FLP) is again sponsoring a unique, merit-based Legal Scholarship Program for the academic year 2022-2023. It is funded by the Tan Yan Kee Foundation and is being carried out in collaboration with the Philippine Association of Law Schools in order to find the top and brightest law students in the country.

Applicants must submit an essay in English of at least 2,000 words and a maximum 3,000 words. It should be printed on 11-inch by 8.5-inch white bond paper with text in Times New Roman 14-point font size, single-spaced, and one-inch margins on both sides, top, and bottom.

Legal Scholarship Benefits

The FLP Legal Scholarship is a monetary scholarship award of ₱200,000 of which a maximum of ₱100,000 shall be for tuition fee, ₱20,000 for book allowance, and ₱80,000 for the stipend.

Who can apply for the Legal scholarship?

Nominees/applicants must satisfy the following to apply for Legal Scholarship:

  1. Incumbent third (3rd) year student in one of the eligible law schools;
  2. In the top 20 of the batch of their respective law schools in terms of academic performance;
  3. Must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) not lower than 85% or 2.25 for the immediately preceding academic year (2021-2022);
  4. No dropped subject and no grade lower than 75% or 3.0 during his or her stay at the law school;
  5. Must not have taken a leave of absence for the immediately preceding academic year (2021-2022); and,
  6. Must have enrolled and completed the full load for the first two (2) years of law school.

The Legal scholarship is merit-based and may be received in addition to existing scholarships, funding, or other financial assistance being availed of by the awardees.

What are the law schools eligible for the scholarship?

Based on statistical data from the Supreme Court Office of the Bar Confidant, FLP is opening 10 scholarship slots to all law schools that have a percentage of passing over the total percentage of passing for the 2020/2021 bar exams. These are the law schools:

List of required documents:

Following are the list of documents required to apply for Legal Scholarship:

  1. One (1) copy of the duly accomplished FLP Scholarship Application Form and the FLP Data Privacy Statement and Consent Form attached to the former;
  2. One (1) copy of the nominee’s/applicant’s official transcript of school records for the first two years of law school for the incumbent third-year applicants;
  3. One (1) hard copy of the essay; and
  4. A certification from the School Secretary/Registrar or any authorized school official that the applicant:
    • is among the top 20 of his/her batch in law school in terms of academic performance; and
    • has enrolled and completed the full load for the first two (2) years of law school
  1. Interview: There will be an interview to be conducted by the FLP Panel of Judges who will be given full discretion in the conduct of the said
  2. Judging and Selection: Judging will be made by the FLP Panel of Judges. The Panel shall consider the candidate’s ability to demonstrate clearly, logically, and concisely what they have done and intend to do to propagate and espouse the philosophy of liberty and prosperity under the rule of law. Although the scholarship is merit-based, the less privileged shall be preferred in case of a tie between two nominees. Selection shall be final when affirmed by the FLP.
  3. Awarding: The FLP Scholarship is a monetary scholarship award of ₱200,000 of which a maximum of ₱100,000 shall be for tuition fees and ₱20,000 for book allowance. The amounts for the tuition fee and the book allowance will be transferred to the student’s account created especially for this purpose. The remaining ₱80,000 is for the scholar’s stipend. Only such amount needed shall be deposited. If the tuition fee component of the monetary scholarship award is in excess of the awardee’s tuition, the balance will be returned to FLP. If the awardee is entitled to another scholarship award, they will still receive the cash monetary scholarship award to be provided by the FLP.
  4. Unclaimed award: If for any reason, an awardee is unable to attend schooling or is unable to claim the monetary scholarship award, FLP shall cancel said scholarship award and grant it to another qualified nominee at its discretion.
  5. Reimbursement: Considering the deadline for applications provided in Section 10, awardees of the FLP scholarship who already paid the tuition for the corresponding semester will be reimbursed upon submission of proof of payment. Where partial payment has been made by the awardee as allowed by the law school, FLP will likewise reimburse the same upon submission of proof of payment and deposit the balance for the tuition fee as provided in Section 6 above.
  6. Agreement: Awardees must agree to the terms and conditions of the FLP Scholarship Program, including but not limited to, the requirement to provide volunteer services for the Foundation as well as giving back to the FLP Scholarship Program to ensure its sustainability such as teaching law subjects that espouse the philosophy of liberty and prosperity, developing a concept/program along the philosophy of the FLP and commitment to mentoring other law students, subject to institutional arrangements with partner law schools. Awardees must likewise agree to enter into a formal commitment agreement with FLP and the pertinent academic institution for this purpose.
  7. Deadline: Applications for the academic year 2021-2022 must be submitted on or before 5 p.m. of March 18, 2022.
  8. Revisions. FLP reserves the right to update and revise the guidelines of the program which shall be announced in its official website.
  9. Financial Commitment. The scholarship is subject to FLP’s receipt of funding from its donors and partners. While FLP has secured funding for the academic year 2022-2023, if such donors and partners fail to provide funding for the subsequent academic years, the awards may be terminated by FLP. The Foundation, its trustees, officers, and staff shall not be liable if such donors and partners fail to provide the funds for the monetary award or revoke such funding.

How to Submit your application?

Applicants must submit an essay written in English with a minimum of 2,000 words and a maximum of 3,000 words. It should be printed on an 11-inch by 8.5-inch white bond paper with text in 14-point font size, Times New Roman, single-spaced, with one-inch margins on both sides, top, and bottom.

The essay must be on the Foundation’s philosophy, expanding on and espousing the precept: safeguarding liberty and nurturing prosperity under the rule of law, and how they will apply it in their legal career.
